Google Earth in Chrome
2015-06-07

To to see the 3d Earth view in Chrome, please enable NSAPI by typing chrome://flags/#enable-npapi in the address bar, clicking enable, and restarting Chrome. (Your mileage may vary.)
For more info on this issue see https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/6213033.
Alternatively, you may want to use Safari, Google Earth plugin works fine in it.

WGC 2014 Poland
2014-07-28

WGC 2014 can be watched at glideport.aero/wgc2014. I've been flying with GlideTrack on an iPhone 4S and it's been working great. Also, every day I upload flight tracks of the top few pilots in 15m for my own anlalysis. Enjoy! Pedja (011)

Flight Visualization
2014-06-26

Hello Pilots,

A test version of the GlidePort.aero live tracking, flight analysis and visualization app is available at http://glideport.aero!

A few highlights of what's new:

  • Rich flight analysis and visualization
Upload your IGC flight tracks to re-play, analyze and view them in 2d and 3d, and to share them with others.

  • High-resolution mobile tracking
Spectators can live-play and visualize your flights in real-time when you use GlideTrack mobile tracker.

  • Social network for gliding
Share tracks, post comments, like / dislike flights, get notified when your friends fly.

As before, GlidePort requires a current version of the Chrome, Firefox or Safari web browser on desktop/laptop computers, it does not work with Windows Explorer.

Here is a short intro video: http://youtu.be/Fhmxg1TyxSc
Here is a longer video of a more in-depth demo: http://youtu.be/wm1gxOEgj4Y

Enjoy! Pedja

PS. Gliding software/hardware vendors are invited to integrate with GlidePort.aero! GlidePort provides an open API which allows any software to send live tracking data over mobile or satellite. The GlideTrack mobile tracker app is a simple example of how the API can be used. The API documentation and the GlideTrack source code are available at http://github.com/glideport/GlideTrack

PPS. The old version of GlidePort will continue to be available at http://gp23.glideport.aero for a short while longer until it is retired.

New Home
2014-05-15

GP has been moved to the new cloud servers (in preparation for deployment of the 2014 version). Please report any problems.

GP Update
2013-06-18

I’ll be flying in several contests for the next few weeks, so I wanted to get a couple of GP updates out before I leave:

  1. Partial mobile support.  Simply point your mobile web browser to glideport.aero.  Login by clicking the Login menu item in order to get your user preferences.  The map and all related navigation work as expected. NOTE: The mobile functionality has only been tested on iOS devices (Safari and Chrome on iPhone and iPad), but not on Android devices.
Do not use GP in flight!
  2. Notifications.  You can now be notified when your buddies fly!  When a tracking device of a pilot that you “follow” becomes active, you get an email notification with a GP link that brings you to the map page showing that pilot’s live track. The map page now shows the number of followers for each of the pilots.  To follow (or unfollow) a pilot simply click on that number (you must be logged in).
Alternatively, you can select any pilot to follow in the Settings > Notifications page.  There you can also see who is following you.

Enjoy! Pedja (011)

Weather Overlays
2013-05-05

The weather overlays have been reintegrated into GlidePort!  Currently, GOES satellite sector imagery for USA Central Plains, South Central, Mid Atlantic and West Central regions are included.  This is 3km resolution visible, water vapor and radar wx overlays at 30min interval.  (Source: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east)

User Interface:  At glideport view level, if there is a wx overlay that covers the glideport, the Wx tab will be displayed.  To turn on/off display of wx overlays on the map, click the Wx tab checkbox.  In the tab, you can select which overlay you want to view.  The overlay opacity control is in the lower right on the map.  Scrubbing through timeline updates the overlay image to best correspond to that moment in time.

What about imagery for where I fly?  More wx imagery will be added as my time allows.  If you want to have wx imagery where you fly, you can expedite the process by sending me the following info:

  1. URL to where the imagery is.  (For example, http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/wc/img/ for USA West Central GOES-W imagery.)
  2. Info how to correlate image time to real time when the image is taken/valid.  (For example, GOES image file names include yyyyddd-hhmm UTC time stamp.)
  3. Geolocation (latitude, longitude) of image bottom-left pixel (south-west corner) and image top-right pixel (north-east corner) with pixel accuracy or better.

NOTE: Imagery must be in Mercator projection so that it can be displayed on Google Map.

GlidePort World-Wide
2013-04-18

I am pleased to announce that the public alpha version of GlidePort web app is available to glider pilots, crews, gliding enthusiasts and spectators world-wide!

  • For general recreational / club flying, GlidePort lets you track gliders in near-real-time, see who’s where on the map.
    • SPOT and inReach satellite tracking devices are currently supported.
    • Free!  Register at glideport.aero, then enter your SPOT or inReach MapShare URL in the tracker settings page.
  • GlidePort makes gliding contests into more of a spectator sport.
    • View how competitors are doing relative to other pilots for the given day task.
    • Crews and spectators can now follow progress of their pilot and general race progress.
  • GlidePort lets you view historical tracking information.
    • Go back through time day-by-day, or animate flight tracks on the map by scrubbing through timeline.
  • GlidePort features world-wide glideport and turnpoint list databases.
    • View Leibacher turnpoint lists on the map, plan your flights, study terain, learn what’s landable and what’s not.

GlidePort runs best in WebKit-based browsers such as Chrome (prefered) or Safari. Alternatively you can use Mozilla/Firefox (it works but not as well). Microsoft Explorer is not supported. GlidePort does not run on mobile devices currently, though that’s coming shortly.

To get started with GlidePort, go to glideport.aero and register. When you submit your registration information you will receive an activation email. Click the link in the email to complete the registration process. If you don’t receive the registration email, check your spam folder. Once you register, go into the various settings pages to provide additional profile information as desired, configure your tracking device by entering SPOT or inReach MapShare URL, and specify your gliding club association. Go to the World Map page to see flight tracks world-wide and navigate to the glideport of your interest.

GlidePort is available freely and publicly for personal use. See Terms of Use for details. For more information including the latest software development news, see the GlidePort blog.

In the US SSA members can access GlidePort through the SSA website via the link on the main page for general US flight tracking, or via the links in the SSA contest page for contest tracking.

Fly safe!
